Food waste or food loss is food that is discarded or lost uneaten.
Global food loss and waste is estimated between one-third and one-half of all food produced. Loss and wastage occur at all stages of the food supply chain.
The average European consumer discards 123 kg of food every year, amount that equals for 16% of the total food that reaches consumers. Almost 80% or 97kg is food that could still be consumed and could therefore be avoided. In the European Union, it is estimated that 88 million tons of food are thrown away annually, a huge waste of resources, which is also contributes to climate change.
